Mosque Chandeliers: A Manufacturer's Guide to Design, Size and Export from Turkey
Mosque chandeliers are among the largest and most demanding lights we make. A main chandelier under a dome can be several metres across, it hangs for decades, and it has to look right both up close and from the back of the prayer hall. Turkey has a long tradition of these large ring chandeliers, and our Istanbul workshop has been producing lighting since 1984. This guide explains the main choices for a mosque lighting project.
Types of mosque chandeliers
Main ring chandelier
The classic Ottoman-style mosque chandelier is a large ring, or several concentric rings, hung low under the main dome. It lights the prayer area evenly and draws the eye to the centre of the space. Rings can be plain, perforated with geometric or calligraphic patterns, or fitted with glass globes and crystal.
Tiered and dome chandeliers
Tiered designs stack several rings at different heights. They suit tall domes where a single ring would look too flat. Spun metal domes and lanterns work well in smaller mosques and side halls.
Secondary lighting
Smaller chandeliers for side domes, the entrance and the women's section, plus wall sconces and lanterns, are usually made in the same finish and pattern so the whole building feels consistent.
Sizing a mosque chandelier
Every building is different, but a few principles guide the design:
- The main ring is sized to the dome and prayer hall. A common starting point is one third to one half of the dome diameter.
- Traditional ring chandeliers hang relatively low, a few metres above the floor, so the light reaches the prayer area and the ring reads as a horizontal crown.
- Secondary pieces follow the scale of their own domes and bays.
We prefer to size from the architect's plan and section, so the proportions are right before production starts. For general sizing rules in tall spaces, see our guide to chandeliers for high ceilings.
Materials, patterns and finishes
Most mosque chandeliers are made of brass or steel. We cut patterns with CNC laser, form parts by CNC spinning and plate them in our own baths, so geometric motifs, calligraphy and custom borders can be produced accurately in series. Finishes include gold, antique brass, bronze and painted colours. Glass globes, crystal or acrylic diffusers can be added.
Light sources and electrics
For a light that hangs high and runs for many hours a day, long-life LED is the practical choice. We plan the light output for even lighting across the prayer area and wire the chandelier to your country's voltage. Dimming or separate circuits for different rings can be specified.
Installation and maintenance
A large chandelier is a structural element. The suspension point in the dome, the weight and the cable or chain system should be agreed with the building's engineer. For very large pieces we can discuss lowering options at the design stage, so cleaning and lamp access are planned from the start. We deliver large rings in sections for transport and assembly on site.
How a mosque lighting project runs
- Brief: drawings or photos of the building, dome diameter and height, and the style you want.
- Design and quote: we propose sizes, patterns and finishes with a price and lead time.
- Approval: drawings and finish samples before production.
- Production in our Istanbul facility.
- Crating and export: parts packed for sea, road or air transport with export documents.
- Assembly: instructions provided, and on-site support discussed per project.

Frequently asked questions
What size should a mosque chandelier be?
The main chandelier under the dome is usually sized to the prayer hall and the dome, not to a standard room. A common starting point is a ring between one third and one half of the dome diameter. We confirm the size after seeing the plan and section of the building.
Do you export mosque chandeliers?
Yes. We produce in Istanbul and ship abroad, with parts crated for transport and assembly instructions or on-site support arranged per project.
Can the chandelier match an existing design or a drawing?
Yes. We can work from an architect's drawing, a photo of an existing mosque chandelier or a description of the style you want, and adapt it to your building.
Can a large chandelier be lowered for maintenance?
For very large pieces we can discuss suspension and lowering options with your engineer at the design stage, so cleaning and lamp access are planned from the start.
Planning lighting for a mosque?
Send us the dome size, photos or drawings of the building, and your delivery country. We'll prepare a design proposal and quote.
